Trial and Tribulation

(#1-AMD) Each of us must go through certain experiences to become more like our Savior. In the school of mortality, the tutor is often pain and tribulation, but the lessons are meant to refine and bless us and strengthen us, not to destroy us. Said the Lord to faithful Joseph:“My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment.” D&C 121:7 “If thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; … know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.”Ether 6:4. (#2-AMD) When they see our steadfastness in keeping the commandments, their fears will subside and their confidence in the Lord will increase.By showing our faith through tribulation, we assure them that the fury of the adversary is not fatal.Robert D. (#3-AMD) My promise to you who pray and serve the Lord cannot be that you will have every blessing you may wish for yourself and your family. But I can promise you that the Savior will draw close to you and bless you and your family with what is best. You will have the comfort of His love and feel the answer of His drawing closer as you reach out your arms in giving service to others. As you bind up the wounds of those in need and offer the cleansing of His Atonement to those who sorrow in sin, the Lord’s power will sustain you. His arms are outstretched with yours to succor and bless the children of our Heavenly Father, including those in your family. “Come unto Me”, April 2013 General Conference by President Henry B. Eyring

(#4-AMD) “In the depths of his anguish in Liberty Jail, the Prophet Joseph Smith cried out: “O God, where art thou? And where is the pavilion that covereth thy hiding place?”1 Many of us, in moments of personal anguish, feel that God is far from us. The pavilion that seems to intercept divine aid does not cover God but occasionally covers us. God is never hidden, yet sometimes we are, covered by a pavilion of motivations that draw us away from God and make Him seem distant and inaccessible. Our own desires, rather than a feeling of “Thy will be done,”2 create the feeling of a pavilion blocking God. God is not unable to see us or communicate with us, but we may be unwilling to listen or submit to His will and His time.”  “Where is the Pavilion?” October 2012 General Conference by President Henry B Eyring

(#5-AMD) Yes, we will make mistakes. Yes, we will falter. But as we seek to increase our love for God and strive to love our neighbor, the light of the gospel will surround and uplift us. The darkness will surely fade, because it cannot exist in the presence of light. As we draw near to God, He will draw near to us.6 And day by day, the hope of God’s light will grow within us, “brighter and brighter until the perfect day.”7To all who feel they walk in darkness, I invite you to rely on this certain promise spoken by the Savior of mankind: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”8 “The Hope of God’s Light”, April 2013 General Conference by President Dieter F Uchtdorf

(#6-AMD) “...we realize that the purpose of our life on earth is to grow, develop, and be strengthened through our own experiences. How do we do this? The scriptures give us an answer in one simple phrase: we “wait upon the Lord.” Psalm 37:9; 123:2; Isaiah 8:17; 40:31; 2 Nephi 18:17. Tests and trials are given to all of us. These mortal challenges allow us and our Heavenly Father to see whether we will exercise our agency to follow His Son. He already knows, and we have the opportunity to learn, that no matter how difficult our circumstances, “all these things shall [be for our] experience, and … [our] good.Doctrine and Covenants 122:7.” "Waiting Upon The Lord, Thy Will be Done" by Elder Robert D Hales October 2011. http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2011/10/waiting-upon-the-lord-thy-will-be-done?lang=eng

(#7-AMD) “Those afflictions will come in all shapes and sizes. Job’s experience reminds us what we may be called upon to endure. Job lost all his possessions, including his land, house, and animals; his family members; his reputation; his physical health; and even his mental well-being. Yet he waited upon the Lord and bore a powerful personal testimony. He said: “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though … worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God.”30 “Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him.”31 Even with the shining examples of Job, the prophets, and the Savior, we will still find it challenging to wait upon the Lord, especially when we cannot fully understand His plan and purposes for us. That understanding is most often given “line upon line, [and] precept upon precept.”32"Waiting Upon The Lord, Thy Will be Done" by Elder Robert D Hales October 2011. http://www.lds.org/general-conference/2011/10/waiting-upon-the-lord-thy-will-be-done?lang=eng

(#8-AMD) “We need strength beyond ourselves to keep the commandments in whatever circumstance life brings to us. … The combination of trials and their duration are as varied as are the children of our Heavenly Father. No two are alike. But what is being tested is the same, at all times in our lives and for every person: will we do whatsoever the Lord our God will command us?” "In the Strength of the Lord" by Elder Henry B Eyring, April 2004 https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2004/04/in-the-strength-of-the-lord?lang=eng

(#6-JTD) “We must be vigilant in a world which has moved so far from that which is spiritual. It is essential that we reject anything that does not conform to our standards, refusing in the process to surrender that which we desire most: eternal life in the kingdom of God. The storms will still beat at our doors from time to time, for they are an inescapable part of our existence in mortality. We, however, will be far better equipped to deal with them, to learn from them, and to overcome them if we have the gospel at our core and the love of the Savior in our hearts.” "Stand In Holy Places" by Thomas S. He therefore gives you experiences that stimulate growth, understanding, and compassion which polish you for your everlasting benefit. (#10-JTD)  “It is clear that for us to have [God's] gift [of eternal life] and to be given [the] trust [of our Heavenly Father], we must be transformed through making righteous choices where that is hard to do. We are prepared for so great a trust by passing through trying and testing experiences in mortality. That education can come only as we are subject to trials while serving God and others for Him” "Adversity" by Henry B. Eyring Ensign May 2009 http://www.lds.org/ensign/2009/05/adversity
